Background of developing WINTER WEATHER SENSOR


Almost conventional sensors for automatic operation of snow-melting facilities detect the existing of snow only.

However, there are following problems in case of usage of above sensors because these sensors cannot measure the amount of snowfall.
a. The sensor asks to start the operation even in case of little snowfall without snow cover.
b. The sensor asks to stop the operation as soon as snowfall stops though the snow remains on the road.
c. The sensor does not ask to start the operation when the freezing happens because the sensor does not have the function to judge the freezing.

To solve the above problems, we developed new weather sensor to measure snowfall and freezing with heating value (J/) based on the “heat balance”.
This weather sensor can control the most suitable snow-melting and defreezing operation according to the amount of snowfall and freezing.

Weather sensor can be used as not only ITS but also snowfall sensor, snow-melting sensor, freezing sensor and freezing prevention sensor.


Development and Technology for WINTER WEATHER SENSOR


  • Detect of snowfall (measurement of QTY of snow particle)
    Sensor measures snow particle by detecting the situation that snow particle intercepts the ray for detecting snow particle.
  • Detect of accretion of snow
    Sensor understands there is the snow on heating value measuring board when snow particle intercepts the ray for detecting snow particle.
  • Measurement of heating value of snow-falling
    Sensor calculates the electric heating value to melt the snow on the heating value measuring board as heating value of snow-falling.
  • Measurement of heating value of freezing
    Sensor calculates the electric heating value supplied to keep the defreezing temperature on the heating value measuring board as heating value of freezing.
  • Control of snow-melting facilities by the measurement of heat balance.
    Sensor controls the most suitable snow-melting according to the amount of snow cover and freezing.


Function of WINTER WEATHER SENSOR


Winter weather sensor measures following items. It is used as ITS.

  • QTY of snow particle (0 – 100pcs /min.)

  • Sensor detects snowfall by measuring the QTY of snow particle.

    *to be used as snowfall sensor.

  • heating value of snowfall (J/)

  • Sensor measures snowfall as heating value of snowfall and controls a snow-melting operation according to heat balance.

    *to be used as snowfall sensor and snow-melting sensor.

  • heating value of freezing (J/)

  • Sensor measures freezing as heating value of freezing and controls a defreezing operation according to heat balance.

    *to be used as freezing sensor and defreezing sensor.

  • Temperature(℃)

Sensor records a measurement value and a situation of operation together with time data.
Measurement data can be distributed via remote monitoring.

Notes


  • The sensor must be set at the place where there is no obstacle like a tree or an electric wire over the sensor.
  • Periodical maintenance is needed for optical parts.

What is a source of light for the photoelectric parts?

LED is.


Winter weather sensor detects a snowfall and accretion of snow with 3 axes x 2 photoelectric devices. As LED is used for a source of light, the sensor has a long span of life and can be operated stably.

Is there any limitation for the setting place?

The sensor must be set at the place where there is no obstacle over the sensor.


The sensor must be set at the clear-viewing place where there is no obstacle like a tree or an electric wire over the sensor. The area of detecting is a cone shape of 45 degree elevation over the sensor.

Can the sensor monitor the situation of road surface directly?

No, it cannot.
